AbstractIn this work we investigate the response of the low latitude ionosphere to Solar Wind High-speed streams (SWHSSs) and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs)-driven recurrent geomagnetic activity during low and descending phase of solar activity of the solar cycle 23. Intense magnetic field regions called Corotating Interaction Regions or CIRs are created by the interaction of fast streams and slow streams ejected by long duration coronal holes in Sun. This interaction leads to an increase in the mean interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) which causes moderate and recurrent geomagnetic storms when interacts with the Earths magnetosphere. The ionosphere can be affected by several ways, such as an increase (or decrease) of the plasma density, intensification of plasma instabilities during post-sunset or post-midnight hours and subsequent development of plasma irregularities/spread-F, as well as occurrence of plasma scintillation. Auroral heating leads to the development of wave activity and Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances, or TIDs, which can affect the middle and the low latitude ionosphere. We analyze the magnetosphere-thermosphere-ionosphere system variation under the impact of events of CIRs/HSSs, which occurred during the solar cycle 23, using multi instrument data and discuss its relevance for Aeronomic and Space Weather studies.
